Rome

Rome. I can tell you now, this magnificent city was not built in a day.

We arrived mid-afternoon after having the traditional afternoon nap on the coach, and were straight on the Metro to our first destination, the Colosseum. Upon leaving the Metro station, we were treated to a wonderful sight of this famous landmark. We contiuned on our evening walking tour and visited the Patheon, Trevi Fountain and Piazza Navona were we were left to pick our choice of resturant for dinner. After taking in the atmosphere of the Piazza during dinner and trying the gelato, we moved on and headed to the Metro and returned to the Hotel. We were later told that it was the quietest Lou had ever seen Rome. Italy had lost their knockout game in the World Cup that day.

The next day, we were back on the Metro to continue exploring Rome. It was an extremely hot day, and we all learned how to say "uno aqua per pervore" pretty quickly (one bottle of water please). We met our guide at the Colosseum, and were taken on a walking tour of the Colosseum, and through the Roman Forum. We were walking past the statue of Marcus Auellius, where we spotted the Mayor of Rome. Time for a quick photo, and we were on our way past the Victor Emmaunel Monument, and were met by Lou. A trip on a public bus, and we were at the Vatican City.

Again, left to explore with our maps, I joined Andy, Jen and Dave on a tour of St Peter's Basilica. We paid out admission to visit the top of the dome, and after a quick ride in the elevator, we were treated to a wonderful view of the inside of the dome. We climed to the top of the dome, and took in the view of Rome. Back down the stairs, and we wondered around inside the basilica. The architecture inside was unbelievable and unforgettable.

We walked around to the Sistine Chapel, only to discover that it had closed 30 minutes earlier. The four of us could not believe it. After a quick break in the shade, we continued to explore Rome on foot and visited the Spanish Steps, before taking a walk back to the Trevi Fountain, and ending up back to Piazza Navona. Another great meal, and we were on our way again, continuing to explore Rome at night. After a walk around Castel Sant'Angelo and stopping to take a look at the festivities, it was time to leave Rome, and head back to the hotel.

Rome... I will be back.
